E-NEWSLETTER FOR APRIL & MAY 2011
FROM PRESIDENT LEFTY:
Welcome Tom and Kalynn Dolby!
What a difference a year makes! Due too many circumstances 2010 ended on a down note. The opportunity to embrace a new direction- with the help of NorthCliff LLC was undertaken. This arrangement has helped to put Mascoutin in a more stable financial position.
The hiring of Tom Dolby as General Manager/Head Pro along with his wife, Kalynn Dolby as Assistant Pro has created a newly found enthusiasm that has been lacking for the past few years. Tom has numerous ideas to make Mascoutin a fun place to be. Please give him your support. Also, under this new financial structure all income from the Pro Shop goes to Mascoutin. So, now is a good time to refresh your wardrobe!!
The changes in the Upper Level have created a more open and casual atmosphere. The emphasis will be on the Upper Level-serving food and beverages. The lower level will strictly be used for large outings and any overflow of banquets. A little more stair climbing—but thinks of it as good exercise!
It appears the new changes at Mascoutin have attracted the attention of area golfers. As of the date we have 13 new members from Oshkosh, Neenah, Berlin, Ripon, Redgranite and Omro-welcome ! Hopefully that figure will increase as the season continues.
The course came through the winter in fantastic shape with no evidence of any snow mold and the greens completely healed from the early fall aerification.
See you on the Course!
Tom Dolby
General Manager/ Head Golf Professional
As I begin to write this article I have just completed my first ever rounds (all 27 holes) at Mascoutin. I can gladly tell you the rumors are true, you have an awesome golf course and facility here. It is a wonderful golf course with 27 holes filled with imagination and beauty. It is also quite evident the great pride and love of Mascoutin that the membership has for this gem. I have talked with many members and can see and hear from them their dedication to service on the various committees, volunteering to help on and with the grounds crew to helping run the club events and functions.
Kalynn and I are very excited to be here and truly hope to make your experiences at Mascoutin a season full of memories. We are going to provide you with great customer service, wonderful and professionally run golf events and hope to help foster a feeling of great camaraderie and good fellowship here at the club. We also will be trying to continually find ways to improve lines of communication with you to help with your experiences here. Customer service is the defining moment of truth for us here at the club. We will be working daily to make the operations and events here better.
The golf shop will be soon fully stocked for your golfing needs. Please stop in and check out the new clubs, clothes and other accessories in the golf shop. We intend on having the best pricing available so please give us a try.
The 2011 reciprocal program is now in place and we will be emailing all of you the info as well as having copies of the info here at the shop. We are trying to get a little better control of the program on both sides so we really need your help in making this happen. We ask that you please have the Mascoutin staff make the times for you and when arriving at the course you are playing that day please introduce yourself as a Mascoutin member and present your club ID. Card. We have added a few new courses to the list which I’m sure you will enjoy in your travels.
As many of you have already seen the changes to the upstairs have made a dramatic difference. The project isn’t over with quite yet. We are working at creating a new look and feel at the Mascoutin Grill & Pub with different golf art, the breathtaking trophy case now upstairs and trying showcase the rich history and traditions at the club.
And finally we are trying to add a long talked about addition to the clubhouse and that is a 24 x 20 deck off of the upstairs bar area. It would be complimented with a beautiful stairway leading into the bar area and the deck. This would help increase traffic into the bar area for sales. The new deck would have 6 tables with chairs and umbrellas. This would make Mascoutin the place to entertain and socialize with outside dining and cock tailing. The project has already received three generous donations of $3000.00 each as well as commitments on 2 patio sets. Please consider making a donation to this long talked about project.
In closing I can’t begin to tell you how thrilled and excited we are to be here. We look forward to getting to know all of you hopefully through a round of golf or while enjoying a cocktail on the beautiful new deck enjoying a Mascoutin sunset.
Let's have some fun, Tom

FROM THE GREENER SIDE:
Welcome to a new year of golf here at Mascoutin. I trust everyone’s winter was enjoyable even though it was too long.
The golf course has survived the winter wonderfully. The snow cleared late this year, but we are finally open and enjoying the course. I am looking forward to another year of great conditions. The clean up and set up of the course should progress quickly and the playing conditions will improve as well. I couldn’t end without the asking everyone to do their part to care for the course during the soft conditions spring always brings us. Please be careful while using the golf carts and use the rough and paths whenever possible until the turf and ground firm up. Remember the recovery process for the turf will not begin until approximately Mother’s Day so the little things really do add up.
Once again welcome back and I look forward to seeing you on the course. Until next month… may your drives be straight and your putts find the hole.
Respectfully,
Bruce M. Livingston, CGCS
MASCOUTIN LADIES
April is here but so is the snow. Looks like we are going to have a late spring. First of all I would like to welcome everyone back to Mascoutin. This certainly will be an exciting year. We have a new General Manager, Tom Dolby and his wife Kalynn -- stop up at the club and welcome them.
This years officers are Mona Auman-Treasurer, Linda Sondall-Secretary, Louise Sedarski - Vice President and Carol Trampf - President.
Our golf committee consists of Carol Thomas, Dianne Navta,
Jan Schmid and Fay McMonigal.
Membership dues are $15.00. Our first meeting and kick-off dinner will be Tuesday, May 31st. New books and sign-up sheets will be available in the ladies locker room .Think SPRING!
SEE YOU ON THE TEE! CAROL
MASCOUTIN MEN'S CLUB
After another long, hard winter a new golf season is just around the corner. This should prove to be an exciting year for the Men's Club as Tom Dolby as proposed several new formats for regular Men's Day events. He's also helping us plan several special events that provide challenging golf as well as an opportunity to meet and mix socially. On that note, the first special event will be the Patriotic Challenge. This scramble format event will be held on May 12, and will be followed by dinner. Details will follow as we get closer to the date.
This year you will have another option for your game. In addition to the gold, blue and white tees a new set of silver tees will be available. Without adding any new tee boxes, a course layout has been established using a mix of blue and white tees, the result being aggregate yardages about midway between the yardages for pure blue and white layouts. New scorecards are being printed that will reflect this extra set of tees, incorporating appropriate course ratings and slopes.
The following schedule lays out what we think the year will look like. Of course circumstances may make changes necessary, but right now this is what you can plan on. Pro Shop sponsored events will carry a $6 entry fee, shootouts will be $10, and our Special events will run between $22.00. The Men's Club will be contributing prize money for Flag events, shootouts and, of course, to Special events.
Tom will be organizing and running all events, but he will need some help. I'll be looking for volunteers, so if you have an interest please let me know. Also, if you have a suggestion for a particular format or event, please pass it along.
Here's to an early Spring; See you on the Course
Rick Horan-Men's Club President
NEWS FROM THE HANDICAP COMMITTEE
We have a new set of men’s tees! Thanks to folks like John Skemp, Dave Charles and Russ Thill, who provided the inspiration, we now have a new set of tees for the men. The Silver Tees will provide a total length of about 6200 yards for all the possible combinations of nines at Mascoutin. The only expense incurred by Mascoutin will be a change of paint to 27 Indian head tee markers by Bruce Livingston and his crew. Essentially, the new course lengths were created by using existing blue and white tees to arrive at total distances of about 3100 yards for each of our nines. So, on a typical blue or white tee box, there will be one blue or white tee marker and the second tee marker shall be silver. The WSGA gave us a course rating and slope for the new tees and this information will be included on our new score cards.
The handicap committee reviewed the hole-by-hole statistics for the men and made some modifications to the existing handicaps. Since the majority of rounds for the men were played from the blue tees, the statistics from those tees were used for this process. The changes to the ranking of holes will be included on the new scorecards.
Since there were not enough rounds played by the women to be able to use the statistical basis for determining handicaps, the WSGA was asked to review the available hole-by-hole information. The WSGA was able to use other acceptable methods to create new rankings for the women and this information will be included on the new scorecards.
The numbered rankings for holes are used for match play situations. The relative ranking of the holes is determined NOT by the difficulty of the hole against par but, rather, by a process that determines where the higher handicapped player most needs the strokes in order to have the opportunity to halve the holes against a lower handicapped player. This process is based on the hole-by-hole reporting of scores by the members of Mascoutin.
The need for accurate hole-by-hole score reporting should be obvious to all players. Inputting for the correct nines (Red, White, and Blue), entering the true score rather than adjusting for ESC (equitable stroke control), and designating the correct tees are all part of the necessary accuracy. All players should have the knowledge, skill, and ability to enter their scores accurately.
Currently, the Mascoutin Handicap Committee consists of Bob Bruce, Scott Steele and Ken Allen (Chair). Liza Ruetten had been a member of the committee this past year but will not be renewing her membership this year. The committee is in need of a female member to represent the interests of women golfers at Mascoutin. It would be helpful if the Ladies’ Club would solicit interest on the part of a woman, particularly someone who is or has been involved in competitive match play.

GOLF TIPS FROM THE PRO....
The short game contributes to over 50 percent of one’s stokes during a round and can be one of the least practiced area of shots by all golfers. Practicing around the green can help lower scores. The “clock method” is great to use while chipping around the green. Whether you are a beginner golfer or +1 handicap, the clock method is very beneficial in consistent chipping.
When getting ready to chip around the green there are a few important tips to remember. Keep your weight on your left side throughout the entire swing. You want to keep your body silent and minimize movement. When following through, it is important to not finish with a closed club face. Also, the higher the hands finish on the follow through the higher the trajectory. The lower the hands finish on the follow through the lower the trajectory.
Now, imagine the ball is at six o’clock. The first chip shot on the clock is five o’clock to seven o’clock. This is used for a short chip. Your club will come back to five o’clock and follow through to seven o’clock. It is important to feel as though you are going to brush the grass with your club. This will get the ball up in the air.
The second chip shot on the clock is four o’clock to eight o’clock. This will be a shot longer in length than the five to seven. Same as before, club comes back to four o’clock and follows through to eight o’clock. I like to think of the four to eight as knee-high to knee-high.
The last chip shot on the clock method is three o’clock to nine o’clock. This can also be thought of as waist-high to waist-high. Use the three to nine for longer chip shots. Everyone will hit their clubs different distances, so practice the clock method and determine what swing lengths hit each distance desired.
